Kidney. The kidneys carry out the crucial role of cleansing and filtering the blood. They regulate fluid and mineral balance, discerning which minerals to reabsorb and which to excrete in order to maintain the all-important acid/alkaline balance of the body. In TCM the kidneys are seen as the source of our ancestral or “jing” energy and the energy reserves we are born with. In the West we may consider this in the light of the adrenal glands, which regulate energy and our ability to respond to stress.

Kidney Meridian. The kidney meridian begins under the little toe, travels along the inner edge of the foot, to the ankle bone and heel, before rising up the inner leg and thigh. A pathway goes to the base of the spine, joining the kidneys and the urinary system, and continuing upwards to enter the brain. Internal paths go to the liver and lungs and to the chest and heart. Its path includes the sex organs, the rectum, the throat and the tongue. There is a connection with the kidney meridian and the “eight extraordinary meridians”. These are deep meridians that are like vast oceans of energy. This energy cycles through the body in a figure of eight pattern, similar to the twisting double helix structure of DNA.
