Thyroid Gland. The thyroid is your body’s thermostat. It sets the rate at which the mitochondria in the cells produce energy, turning up the heat when you need more energy to do something or to keep warm. Maintaining an optimal body temperature of around 37°C is crucial for all the metabolic processes in the body to happen efficiently. The thyroid is also involved in calcium metabolism, which is a nutrient that’s crucial for many functions in the body, including energy production and sugar regulation.

Body Cavities. Energetic Integrator 9 has a unique function in its effect on all the major cavities of the body. This includes the three major cavities of the cranium, chest and abdomen, as well as the smaller spaces around each organ and around structures like the joints. These spaces are where energy can arise, accumulate, and be stored. The cavities act like batteries that charge up your energy. Energy is of tremendous importance for all body functions and fatigue is one of the first signs that the body is struggling on some level. Triple Burner Meridian. The Triple Burner Meridian is so named because it controls the flow of energy in the three “burning spaces” into which your organs are housed. The upper burner contains the lungs and heart; the middle burner contains the spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder; and the lower burner contains the small and large intestine, the bladder and the kidneys. The Triple Burner is responsible for maintaining a balanced flow of energy and heat between them, and, by extension, throughout the entire body. We can think of this in terms of homeostasis – the process that maintains equilibrium throughout the different components of the body both in their relation to one another and in their response and adaptation to environmental changes. Hormones play a crucial role in communication throughout the body and in maintaining homeostasis.

The meridian starts at the tip of the ring finger, travels up the back of the arm through the point of the elbow and into the shoulder. From here a deep channel connects to the pericardium and the three burners, circulating around to come up through the neck and the ear, ending at the eyebrow point.

Hormonal Regulation. Integrator 9 is involved hormonal balance, which is regulated through intricate feedback mechanisms between the brain and the endocrine glands. Hormonal regulation also depends on the body maintaining optimum temperature, both for the energising of the glands that produce hormones and for the activation of the hormones themselves in the cells. There is also a relationship between our hormones and our day/night rhythm, with energy-driving hormones produced during the day and sleep and repair hormones produced during the night (at least this is what happens when everything is flowing well).

Sodium/Calcium Relationship. Calcium and sodium work together to maintain the electric charge across the cell membrane, which is important for the movement of substances into and out of the cell and therefore the cell’s metabolism. Their natural position is to gather outside the cell, with potassium and magnesium having an opposite role inside the cell. Because their concentration outside the cell is higher than inside they can naturally pass down this concentration gradient and into the cell. The body pumps them back out again, pushing out three sodium for every two potassium, so maintaining a strong cell membrane potential (a difference in electric charge). This process requires energy. It also has a day/night rhythm. During the day the cells are open for business and more sodium and calcium can come in. During the night the cells shut up shop and this process is reversed. If we do not have adequate energy, calcium and sodium can build-up in the cell and we may not fully recharge our batteries at night, causing us to awake feeling fatigued and unrefreshed. Integrator 9 helps to maintain homeostasis here too.

Emotions. The throat centre and the thyroid are linked to speech and the ability to communicate. The thyroid is seen as the source of our personal power, like a little sun that shines brightly, emanating warmth and confidence. With a block there may be a tendency to be withdrawn, timid, shy and uncommunicative. Warmth is expansive and radiates outwards. We equate it with feelings of connection, compassion, openness, affection and joy. Cold is restrictive. It can cut us off, leave us feeling isolated or “blue”. Too much heat may cause anxiety or burn-out. With poor regulation there may be a tendency to blow hot and cold, to be over-sensitive or moody.
